A nice itinerary for a day tour together with Shirakawa-go. Booked a tour from Klook to get here. Just across the tour bus parking area. A nice old townscape. Lots of shops selling local products.

It's a nice area to walk around, shop, and eat snacks. I think it's wonderful that they were able to preserve this piece of history so well. Most shops close at around 5 or 6PM, but it's still worth walking around here in the evening for the vibes. It's definitely a touristy spot, but not really crowded when I visited (11/28 to 11/29).

Charming old street with traditional houses and some of the shops are selling century old crafts and food. There’s a traditional miso and soya sauce shop with free tasting. Both the miso paste and soya sauce were so nice. Wished I could have bought more to bring home. The Miso and soy sauce shop is called Ohnoya Takeda. We went on a Wednesday afternoon and for some reasons half of the shops were closed. It was still worthwhile visiting with lots of snacks available and shops to browse. We walked from the start of the street right till the end where it joins the river. Autumn colours were beautiful in Takayama generally. The maple trees we thought were plastic at first but they were actually real trees with very vivid colours.

Very nice town to experience buildings during Edo period. There is a lot of food shops, and the one I encounter is a shop that selling homemade miso paste. The weather was freezing and they serve free sample of their miso soup (a mix of white and red miso paste) and it was delicious, I ended up bought the miso paste. There is also a rickshaw service, and the driver will take you around the town.

These historic streets were really well worth visiting in Takayama. Many unique little houses, now mostly used as shops. Gift shops selling unique Hida lacquerware, Sake shops, restaurants and so on. Definitely worth the visit when in Takayama. Highly recommended!!
