Tamagawa-dera is a Soto sect temple located in Tamagawa, Haguro-cho, Tsuruoka City. Gyokusen-dera Temple, located at the foot of the Dewa Sanzan, is said to have been founded by Zen Master Ryoren Homyo, a senior disciple of Zen Master Dogen, the founder of the Soto sect, over 700 years ago during the Kamakura period (1251). The current pond stroll garden was built during the Muromachi period and renovated during the Edo period, and has been designated as a national scenic spot. I was grateful to receive the Goshuin seal from Tamagawa-dera Temple.

At first I thought the admission fee was just for the garden, but I was able to see the garden from the large main hall. We could have gone down into the garden, but due to the heavy rain, we could only view from the main hall. They also offer matcha tea service (600 yen) and lunch service (3000 yen) if you apply at least 3 days in advance. I was lucky that I was able to take my time and watch it since it was a private show. It must be even more beautiful during the autumn leaves season.

Gyokusenji Temple at the base of Mt. Haguro is simply the best spot for a cup of green tea in Shonai, or perhaps even Tohoku. The 400-year old national heritage gardens of Gyokusenji are the perfect backdrop to meditate or simply take in the Zen. Well worth the visit.
