We were exploring the Geisha District and stumbled upon this breathtaking bridge!Though the elusive geishas remained unseen, the bridge spoke volumes of the tales it harbors. An afternoon well spent on a bridge, a symbol of the district's rich history and timeless allure. We went during the end of winter so we could see some of the sakura starting to bloom, I can only imagine how beautiful this area is during spring.

The bridge is particularly charming at night, specially during cherry blossom season when illuminated with red lanterns, its really truly magical.

(Trip was made back then on 30 Nov 2019, 2 years before the Covid-19 Pandemic hit) Paid a visit to Gion’s Shirakawa Canal as I read that it depicts a picturesque scene of traditional old tea houses running along the canal with beautiful autumn leaves in the background. However, by the time we arrived, most of the autumn leaves have fallen and the trees were practically bare, except for a few shades of red. It probably would have probably looked a lot better if we were here in mid-November, but after having seen numerous breathtaking autumn foliage sites in Shiga, Gion’s Shirakawa Canal can’t even be compared to them. Come here if you have spare time and nothing else better to do (which I doubt it when you’re in Kyoto), otherwise you can just give it a pass.
