This old samurai residence is found upstream along the Aiba Waterway (Aibagawa). The main hall, found across the bridge, stands out particular for the design around its tearoom. The house uses water diverted from the river which, after passing through the water garden with a pond in the center, is drawn into the kitchen for domestic use, after which it is drained back into the river, in a construction system known as hatoba. An old map from the Edo period records this as Toiban (flood gate keeper), so historians believe this residence was home to the water manager for the Aiba Waterway.

It was the place in Hagi that appealed to me the most. A river is drawn into the mansion to create a garden landscape and provide water for daily use. It seems that an old woman lived alone until several decades ago. I felt like I had traveled back in time and visited my relatives in the countryside when I was a child.

An interesting mansion that makes good use of the river's water flow Bringing river water into the bathroom and kitchen, I am using it as is. People still wash their clothes with river water I saw you.

At the Old Yukawa Residence, a samurai residence from the domain era, located along the Aiba River, you can see the wisdom of our ancestors to draw river water into their residences and use it for domestic water. The children were also shocked to learn that the kitchen hatchback and bathroom had been in use until around 1992. The resident guide (wearing a yellow jacket) gave detailed and easy-to-understand explanations, and it was a very educational facility. There are carp swimming in the splendid garden, which is connected to the river outside, which gives it an indescribable atmosphere, and although it was a Saturday and Sunday, there weren't too many tourists, so it's a recommended place for leisurely sightseeing.

The kitchen that utilizes the flow of the river is interesting. The atmosphere is relaxing and relaxing. Also, the explanations were thorough and my understanding improved.

wonderful! There are many old samurai residences left in various places, but residences like this one are extremely rare. The floor plan has been carefully designed so that you can enjoy the beautiful scenery in each season. The contrast with the bright courtyard seen from the dimly lit tatami room. A waterworks workshop that uses water from the river brought into the residence. Everything is worth seeing.
