Very peaceful place, very large and set in a beautiful setting. You will have to remove shoes but will get sleepers to walk around. The self guided "tour" is well arranged so that you see all the different buildings and get to go inside. English signs describe each building function. You do see the monks going on their daily rituals. All in all, close to 2 hours at a slow pace. Most parking in the high street is around 300 yen for the day.

on a saturday in Feb, visiting this temple in Fukui by car. it was a cold day, but not snowing. some snow were left around. paying fee of about 500 yen for an adult, taking off my shoes to slippers, and walking around in the temple. it took about 1 hour for us to go back. it cant be helped but i wanted to walk around with my slippers due to the footache... at last i made it around. many rooms here to worship or pray. it was a nice stay to see and know about about 1000 years old Buddhist temple.

One of the five Zen Buddhism 曹洞宗. ( Another one is 臨濟宗 located in Taiwan). When I sit upper the top temple, close the eyes and I feel it’s peaceful inner the mind. The energy from nature and the fresh feeling across the body top to bottom. What’s a amazing place to slow down pace. Additionally, I suggest to buy the inbound bus ticket first before coming to 永平寺temple. It’s 750 yen/ person to east side of Fukui station.

Probably the most beautiful temple I’ve ever seen and been! Everything looks like in the movie, the atmosphere was cool and spiritually peaceful, maybe because it was cloudy, a bit rainy and misty. The temple is immense! 2 hours aren’t enough to see everything. I went there by car so it’s very easy to get there, but for those who go by train or by bus it will take time, but definitely worth it!

Glorious temple complex, embedded in the forest. Sprawling buildings across and up the hill. Wonderfully maintained old wooden structures, with newer walkways to help preserve the original ones. Mossy rocks and century old trees adding to the bewilderment.
