It's a small museum but it is well-designed with a few works from famous artists that can be accessed by the visitors for free. Only the special exhibit has a fee. There are many souvenirs from different artists that is for sale as well.

Must visit art museum, if you come to Kumamoto and you live art with ideas in various mediums. I came twice and I never regretted.

Well this was a very meaningful visit for me. They have an exhibit which features an artist that did some photography on the rooms of people - after their death - who lived alone. I really wasn't struck as much by the photography as I was by something I read in the description of the artist's work. "What is the difference between 'solitude,' 'isolation,' and 'independence?'" particularly knocked me on my a-s. Yeah the whole thing about the ambiguity of my secluded lifestyle just got deeper in my mind. These words took me further into the self-imposed liminal zone I've created in my life.

Very small gallery, with two small free galleries plus a bigger rotating paid gallery. Nice building and nice art market/gift store. Friendly staff.

I went here during my short trip to Kumamoto. It is well accessible from the town centre. Admission fee is reasonable, and there is a special price for students. Other than exhibitions, this place also has a quite huge reading space with a live piano session (No picture allowed inside) and art supply-slash-merchandise store.
